PROGRAMME SUMMARY

 

These course-subjects, each with a 30-hour duration that comes with evaluations and awarding of Lotus Certificates are also an integral part of the Training Diploma Programme. Furthermore, these course-subjects can also be available to applicants without the requirement for evaluations which will then be a part of the “Open-training programme”.

Art History

Students studying Art History at Lotus will develop a strong awareness about the nature of fine art and design, the changes that have taken place and why they have done so. Students will cover major movements from pre-history, right up to the modern day. They will be required to be active and inquisitive in their learning and take a full part in contributing to the lectures, and seminars. Students will attend a series of lectures, seminars and presentation, and share their thoughts and opinions regarding the work being presented. Students will complete an essay based on a topic specified at the beginning of term and linked directly to the subject matter.

Visual Literacy (I, II)

This course involves students in developing their practical and theoretical abilities in interpreting and producing images and motifs imbued with messages and meaning. Visual elements such as composition, line, shape, form, tone, colour and the various interpretations of all of these will be examined, discussed and reproduced to ensure understanding, competence and personality show in all students’ work. Students will undertake a range of initial exercises examining line, shape, composition, stress and balance and how these have an effect on the work of artists past and present.

Perspective (I, II, III, IV,V,VI)

This course will help students to explore and understand the relationships between mathematics and art. The course will help students investigate proportions and numeric sequences making clear where the worlds of mathematics and art intersect while also giving a sense of context by outlining the historical origins and current uses of this approach to date. Students will use various fundamental drawing media to produce work with strong design, symmetry and above all a strong sense of perspective. Students will begin the course attempting exercises using one point perspective to create simple shapes and forms. Once competent, students will move on to multiple perspectives, creating drawings from observation while constantly applying these rules of this technique.

Colours Theory (I, II)

Many theories surround colour a how it is used in art and design and students on this course will cover its many creative, technical, philosophical and scientific aspects. Understanding Colour will give students a great advantage when studying or working in art and design with the ability to understand and apply elements such as hue, tone balance and simultaneous contrast. This course is ideally paired with our painting or interior design courses.
Students will begin with simple exercise in mixing and placing colour using medium such as gouache and acrylic paint, while also developing awareness of the contextual developments in the use of colour throughout history. As students gain competence they will develop more advanced images applying their colour awareness skills to create contrasts and subtle patterns and imply meanings, emotions, thoughts and ideas.

Keys to Drawing (I, II)

This course is aimed primarily at students who wish to learn the fundamental principles of drawing, offering an introduction to drawing techniques, measuring, shapes, forms. The skills learned here will allow students to progress effectively towards the higher level art and design courses we offer. This course is ideally coupled with our program on ‘Light and Shadow’. Students will undertake a range of exercises and projects investigating the basic principles of drawing. Students employ a range of materials and will apply the skills learned to ever-more advanced drawings and produce a wide body of work.

Light and Shadow (I, II, III, IV, V, VI)

This course focuses on the effects of light and shadow on various forms and requires students to create observational recordings of the effects, quality, design and purpose of understanding light and shadow. Students will also discover the historical context of light and shadow in classic and modern paintings, from the application of ‘chiaroscuro’ in classical painting, to the pattern-like approach of modern art. Students will use a range of materials to undertake various exercises investigating light and shadow. Students will produce visual records based on observation, as well as studies based on work by old masters such as Leonardo da Vinci.
